Make filling out surveys not suck
I'm filling out the 2015 WIAA Tournament Availability Survey, and it's a painful experience. There are about 30 questions. Each one requires a transition to a dedicated page and then a transition back to the survey. Having to go to a separate page is bad enough, since most of the questions could be answered with an inline check box. Worse is the slow animation that makes the transition between pages especially sluggish. To top it all off, when the transition comes back to the survey page, the scroll position at the top, so I have to find my position on the page again.
All this would be fixed with inline editing of answers, which would be my first choice for how to fix the current mess.
We are planning an upgrade to the Survey process that will include inline editing of questions. At this time, we do not have a timeline for its completion, but it is something we intend to improve.
Thanks for filling out a suggestion. As a fellow official and having completed the Basketball survey, I understand your frustration. I agree that inline editing would be much more convenient.
Early on in the design process for the availability surveys, we made the decision to save every answer separately so that even if a user's connection was interrupted, only up to one question's work would be lost. With RefRanking, there were many instances of the entire survey not being saved even though the system sent a confirmation email. I understand that some of that can be attributed to bad forms design and HTML POSTs, but we wanted a much stronger design.
As such, each time an answer is submitted, the system saves that answer so the whole survey can be retained. This also allows you to stop filling out the survey and come back to make changes or complete it.
In order for us to support inline editing, we will need to convert from simple HTML POST commands to an AJAX call saving each answer. While this is certainly not impossible, it hasn't yet been high enough on our priority. We continue to work on the highest requests issues in this forum. When we do get to work on this request, would you be willing to participate in any testing?
Again, thanks for your feedback, and have a great day.
